Best Ways to Delete All Facebook Messenger Messages in 2026: Tools Compared

Last verified October 19, 2026 · Written and verified by Vladyslav Verbytskyi

Short answer: Messenger has no Delete all button, so every bulk option either repeats Facebook's own per-chat delete for you or works from a copy of your data. For a few chats, the manual menu is enough. For a large inbox in desktop Chrome, a side-panel extension that lets you pick conversations, such as Messenger Cleaner, is the controlled option. If you want one tool across many networks, a desktop app like Redact covers Messenger too. Whichever you use, deleting a chat removes your copy only. The other person keeps theirs.

This comparison was checked on October 19, 2026 against each tool's own Chrome Web Store listing or website, linked below. Listings change, so open the link before you install.

When to pick which

  • A handful of chats: do it by hand. Hover over the chat, open the … menu, choose Delete chat and confirm. Nothing to install, and the steps are in our complete Messenger guide.
  • Hundreds of chats, and you want to choose which ones: use a tool that lets you tick conversations before it runs. Messenger Cleaner and Lynx both work that way. One-click "delete everything" tools are faster to start but give you less say over what goes.
  • You may want some chats back: archive instead of deleting. Messenger Cleaner, Lynx and both Delete Facebook Messages listings offer bulk archive. Messenger Cleaner can also bulk restore from Archived for free.
  • Marketplace or Page inboxes: the two Delete Facebook Messages listings name Marketplace (and, for one, Page inboxes) explicitly. Messenger Cleaner's listing does not make that promise, so one of those is the better fit if Marketplace is your main problem.
  • Several networks at once, or deletion on a schedule: Redact is a desktop app built for many platforms, and its paid plans add scheduled deletions. A single-purpose Chrome extension will not do that.
  • Phone only: Chrome extensions do not run inside the Messenger app. Use press-and-hold → Delete on each chat, or switch to a desktop browser for bulk work.

Where Messenger Cleaner fits, honestly

Messenger Cleaner works at the conversation level: it deletes, archives or restores whole chats you selected, in your own Chrome tab, and asks you to confirm before deleting. It understands the common Facebook interface languages, so you do not have to switch Facebook to English. The free plan includes 10 successful delete or archive actions per day; a paid upgrade removes the limit (see pricing).

What it does not do: it does not unsend individual messages for the other person, it pauses if you switch away from the Messenger tab, and it runs only in desktop Chrome. If you need any of those, it is the wrong tool.

Things no tool can do

  • Delete the other person's copy. Only Delete for everyone (formerly Unsend) on a single message you sent removes it from their side. No bulk tool changes that. See Delete vs. Archive vs. Unsend.
  • Undo a delete. Deleted conversations are not recoverable from Messenger. Download a copy first: Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information, and include Messages.
  • Make a password safe to share. None of the extensions above ask for your Facebook password. Be wary of any service that does, or that wants you to paste session cookies.
