How to Free Up Gmail Storage (and Why Deleting Isn't Enough)
Short answer: To free up Gmail storage, delete large emails (search larger:10M or has:attachment larger:5M), delete old promotions and newsletters, then empty Trash and Spam — deleted email keeps using space until it leaves Trash. Your free 15 GB is shared with Google Drive and Google Photos, so check which one is actually full first. To clear years of newsletters quickly, Gmail Cleaner moves selected senders' email to Trash in bulk.
When the storage is full, Gmail stops sending and receiving email, so this is worth fixing before it happens.
Step 1: Check what is using your storage
- Open Google One storage while signed in.
- Look at the split between Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos.
If Photos or Drive is the big one, cleaning Gmail will barely help. If Gmail is large, continue below.
Step 2: Delete large emails
Attachments use far more space than text. Search for the biggest emails first:
- In Gmail's search bar, type
larger:10Mand press Enter. Trylarger:5Morhas:attachment larger:2Mnext. - Go through the results. Save any attachment you need to your computer first.
- Tick the select-all box, click Select all conversations that match this search, and click Delete.
Useful variations: filename:mp4, filename:zip, has:attachment older_than:2y.
Step 3: Delete old promotions and newsletters
Thousands of image-heavy marketing emails add up to a lot of space.
- Search
category:promotions older_than:6m(orcategory:social older_than:6m). - Select all matching conversations and click Delete.
- For specific senders, search
from:newsletter@example.comand do the same.

Step 4: Empty Trash and Spam
This is the step people miss. Everything you deleted is still stored until it leaves Trash.
- In Gmail's left menu, click More → Trash.
- Click Empty Trash now and confirm. This is permanent.
- Open Spam and click Delete all spam messages now.
Gmail also clears Trash and Spam automatically after 30 days, so if you can wait, the space comes back on its own. Storage figures can take a while to update after a big deletion.
Clear newsletter senders in bulk with Gmail Cleaner
Step 3 is the slow one when the mail comes from dozens of senders. Gmail Cleaner lists them and clears them in one run.
- Open Gmail in Chrome and click the Gmail Cleaner icon. It opens in Chrome's side panel.
- Scan. Gmail Cleaner lists the senders Gmail identifies as newsletters and mailing lists, with how many emails each sent you.
- Sort by count and select the biggest senders.
- Choose delete. Optionally keep starred or important mail, or only delete emails older than a chosen age.
- Start the run, then empty Gmail Trash when you have checked the result.
Gmail Cleaner moves email to Trash; it does not empty Trash for you, so the space is freed when you empty Trash or after Gmail's 30 days. Scanning is free and the free plan moves up to 100 emails to Trash per day; paid access removes the daily limit. You can also unsubscribe from those senders in the same run so the space does not fill up again — see how to unsubscribe from all newsletters in Gmail.
Keep Gmail from filling up again
- Unsubscribe from newsletters you no longer read.
- Filter noisy senders straight to Trash with Delete it — see how to stop unwanted emails in Gmail.
- Share links, not attachments. A Drive link uses no Gmail space for the recipient's copy.
- Repeat the
larger:10Msearch every few months.
FAQ
How much free storage does Gmail have?
A free Google account has 15 GB, shared between Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos.
What happens when Gmail storage is full?
You cannot send or receive email until you free space or buy more. Senders get a bounce message, and mail sent to you during that time is not delivered.
Does archiving free up Gmail storage?
No. Archived email stays in All Mail and still counts. Only deleting, and then emptying Trash, frees space.
Why didn't my storage go down after deleting emails?
The emails are still in Trash. Empty Trash, or wait 30 days. The storage figure can also take some time to refresh.
Does Gmail Cleaner permanently delete emails?
No. It moves them to Gmail Trash, so you can still restore them for 30 days, and the space is freed once Trash is emptied.
Bottom line
Check which service is full, delete large and old email, then empty Trash and Spam — that last step is where the space comes back. For a mailbox buried in newsletters, Gmail Cleaner clears many senders at once and can unsubscribe you from them while it is at it.
